Edgar Pereira was born in Lisbon, and is trained in early modern history and history of global interactions from the 16th to the 19th centuries, at New University of Lisbon, before he started his doctoral research at Leiden University, in the Netherlands.
He is currently a member of the ERC-granted project ‘Fighting Monopolies, Defying Empires 1500-1750: a Comparative Overview of Free Agents and Informal Empires in Western Europe and the Ottoman Empire’, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Cátia Antunes. Within this project, Edgar is working on a dissertation on what could be called in present-day terms, the “public-private partnerships” that underpinned the financing and governance of the Portuguese overseas empire during the 17th century.
For the past couple of years, he has become interested in the connections and exchanges between the Iberian the Nordic worlds, not only in Europe, but also in the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean space.
